Clear Fork River & Central Ohio Smallmouth Streams

The gauge linked to above is below the Pleasant Hill Dam in the Mohican State Park. It measures the flow for what is known as the "lower river." The lower river is from the dam downstream through the park approximately five miles until the confluence of the Clear Fork and the Black Fork. Fishable levels on this gauge are less than two feet. Ideal deal conditions are around 1.25 to 1.5 feet. Please note that this flow is controlled by the dam and can rise or fall significantly in a 24 hour period. The "upper river" upstream from Pleasant Hill dam does not have a gauge.

Tuesday, May 27, 2008: The Clear Fork has been fishing well. I've no recent first hand experience so I'll leave it at that for the moment.
Monday, April 21, 2008: The Clear Fork is in great shape and the water is at an ideal level for the moment. I was on stream on Saturday. There were a few fish rising. There were midges and small caddis on the water. Look for some hendricksons mid to late afternoon.
Friday, April 11,2008: Water levels on the Clear Fork this winter have been less than ideal. Today it's at 1.7 which is fishable but on the high side. We are just coming into the best season. A trip to the Clear Fork over the next few weeks could be the best thing to get over this winter.
Friday, February 22, 2008: The gauge this morning shows that they have reduced the flow from the dam. This has been a trend for weekends so it looks like there could be some fishing opportunities in the park for the next few days. Always remember to check the gauges before you make a trip.
Wednesday February 12, 2008: The water is up again, way up and this week is out for fishing the Clear Fork. Always remember to check the gauges before you make a trip.
Sunday, January 13, 2008: The water is up again, way up and this weekend is out for fishing the Clear Fork. Always remember to check the gauges before you make a trip.

Tuesday, May 27, 2008: The stealhead season is wrapping up for 2008. There were reports of some fish still in the rivers as late as this weekend but too few to really make it worthwhile. Don't forget that the very same streams we enjoy for steelhead also have some great spring smallmouth fishing.
Monday, April 21, 2008: The season is on. I've had nothing but great reports from the Erie tributaries. Lots of fish and some good size ones this year. Typically the season would be winding down by late April and there is no telling how long this will last so make the most of it while you can.
Friday, April 11,2008: This week we've finally had some consistent fishing. The fish are in the rivers in good numbers and the guides report catching many fresh fish. Rain last night has turned the streams back up but in some cases this is welcome and could continue to improve conditions. Keep an eye on the gauges.
Wednesday February 12, 2008: Some of the rivers are frozen. Some of the rivers are blown. There have been spotty reports of some decent fishing but for the most part the best is yet to come.
Sunday, January 13, 2008: "Chocolate milk" that's the way most of the steelhead streams look today. We did get some good days in over the holidays and the fish are in in good numbers. All we need is some decent water. Always remember to check the gauges before you make a trip
Friday, December 14, 2007: No fishing this week. The water is very high and looks to be that way for a while.
Friday December 7, 2007: Friend and guide Patrick Robinson (Left) has the following report. "I hit the water today for some steel and here is what I found. The Vermillion was slammed with a lot of flow ice, fishable in some places (second hand report). The Chagrin had some flow ice, but was looking pretty nice (did not fish). Fished the Rocky for a few hours with lots of fish. Fish came on egg patterns in pink, small copper john and prince nymphs. The water was slightly stained with visibility to about 10-12 inches. Overall, it was a really good day to be out! The weekend should be absolutely prime winter steelheading!"
Wednesday, November 14, 2007: The fish are in. The farther east you go generally the better the fishing this time of year. The end of last week we had some great reports. Recent rain put the Grand off color on Tuesday but this can only mean good things once the green comes back.
Sunday, October 28, 2007: It's on! The season got a slow start with very low water conditions across the entire region. Steady rains this past week have turned that around and we've already had reports of good fishing in NE Ohio. Look for more rain to bring up the tribs and bring in the fish.
